Robert L. Karr
Watercolor magic
happened at Robert Karr’s first class with Shirley Bird Wright, who has gone on to be his mentor and continuous teacher. Because of that first class, Robert has studied with many of the top watercolor artists in the USA, and he has been very successful with his art.
Robert was 65 when he took his first class and has only been able to paint for limited times during the year because of the demands of his commercial iris garden. Even with this limitation, he has had numerous shows of his work with the art associations he belongs to (Evergreen Art Association in Newport, River Ridge Association of Fine Arts in Spokane) as well as solo shows at Spokane Art Supply; two solo shows at the Cutter Gallery in Metaline Falls WA; a solo show at Pend Oreille
Players Association Gallery in Newport, WA, and the Forza Coffee House and Ruby Salon in Spokane. Recently Robert became a member of the Spokane Watercolor Society and the Palouse Watercolor Socius. He has been spotlighted in several newspapers and in publications such as the Northern Lights and Selkirk Sun. He has participated in several shows both as a fiber artist and a watercolorist at Create Arts Center in Newport, WA and Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls, WA.
Ink to Media has spotlighted him with a dual show, and his work can be seen in several businesses in Newport and Spokane. His work has been part of the First Friday event in Spokane.
Robert travels to workshops with Lien Zhen to study Chinese styles of painting. He has studied with Thomas Lynch, Jan Fabian Wallake, Elizabeth Kincaid, Ron Ranson, Yuming Zhu, Stan Miller and other local and regional artists. While watercolor is his passion, he also works in oils with Teen (Lee) McGowan of Metaline Falls WA.
Regional history and recording of local landscapes have captured Robert’s interest as seen in his vivid paintings of barns and other old structures and his summer and winter scenes throughout Pend Oreille Countyin particular. Chinese ink and watercolor painting in both the spontaneous and detailed methods are of special interest to Robert. His work can be seen on Ink to Media’s Spotlight on Artists website, in his studio in Newport, and on his website, www.sprucecorner.com.
